NEW! Animated planet

This is the product of some experimenting on my part... so feedback and suggestions are welcome. No promise this will end up in-game.

This is an animated GIF of an Earth-like planet I created. Keep in mind this is a GIF so there is pixilation and rough edges, and it is
shown here at half-size, to save on load time. The animation is not smooth, since there are only 8 frames in the rotation. I could make
a VERY smoothly animated rotation with 30 or 40 frames, but the idea is not to have a quickly spinning planet, but to let the player see
multiple sides of the planet at a slow interval as you fly up on the planet.

The shadow effect is an overlay of another image that has alpha-blending, which creates a fairly convincing illusion of 3D shadowing.

NEW! Graphical controls for map control.

Here are some new graphics to help out with viewing the star maps. Included is a scrollbar to zoom in and out easily, and also I included a sprite
strip for buttons that will flip the map fully on its face or fully on its side. The darker image will be displayed until either mouse-over or mouse-click
(whichever looks better) and then the illuminated button can be displayed.

This is the jump point - it is alpha blended so if it happens to be placed over a line on the grid, it will look fine.

These are the planets, with a subtle alpha channel blending of black around the edges, so if a planet overlaps another planet or a line on the grid, it
looks good. Strip is 9x9 pixels for each image.

While colors and designations can be discussed and finalized at any time, here is my "key" to the images, from left to right:
1. Gray planet is normal, habitable planet, just like in the original game.
2. Red is inhabitable planet / no life detected
3. Yellow is gas giant
4. Blue is...available should we need it. I was thinking it could be used for ocean planets, but then that would give rise to the question of whether
we have special icons for desert planets, ice planets, etc, which I want to avoid. I want the icons to be simple and represent one basic classification.
5. Black could be used for unknown objects / anomalies.
6. The lined thingy indicates an artificial planet / space station.

The trusty old Sundog icon, pointing in all compass points. Each image is 11x11.

The stars, to insert in the center of the solar grid. Each image is 17x17, and the letter at the bottom of the strip will not be visible once the 17x17
pixel cut is made. The letters correspond to the star class, as do the colors.

Red Alert light - See updated cockpit graphic (below) for where this light goes.

NEW COCKPIT - 1024x768
10-23-2007 = ALTERED MFD SIZE TO FIT NEW STAR MAP SCREEN,
AND CHANGED COMM SCREEN TO ALLOW MORE SPACE FOR TEXT

New Sundog cockpit - demo version. While this looks scary and daunting, this screen simply shows everything that the Sundog cockpit displayed - just without the hassle of paging through those screens. Everything is displayed at once (though the NAV and TAC screens flip back and forth with a toggle button). There are a few minor additions, however, such as the ability to select whether you pull fuel first from the pod's storage or from the ship's tanks.

And here are all the buttons and switches that will be added to the blank cockpit screen.

- Shield slider button with alpha transparency for the shadow (may not display properly in some web browsers)

= blinking status bar seen when the sub-C drive is in operation

= "eyebrow" lights for the diagonal panels. The cyan color can be made transparent for insertion onto the panel.

While I would like to have some kind of 3D IFF ship images, here are some 2D images for the meantime. Half of them are from the original game, and the other half are just ships I slapped together. The size of the ships is smaller than the IFF window, since some room must be allowed for damage bar and text.

NEW! Enemy ships for the combat scenarios. This transparent PNG image is divided up as a table, with rows 25 pixels wide and 13 pixel tall.
These ships correspond (somewhat) to the IFF images shown above. If you need to identify which ones are what, contact me. ;)

NEW! A seamless pattern of stars for the space scenes, and since it's seamless you can pan across the quilted pattern of this image without realizing it's only one small image.  The enemy ship images above look pretty good on this background also!

NEW!.... AND FUN!  Eventually, you'll hit a ship with your guns. When that happens, a nice explosion will ensue. I've been toying with some explosions, and have two that look somewhat alright... I'll post them here for feedback.
